Redding is the county seat of Shasta County. With a population of 90,000, it's the state's largest city north of Sacramento and is located along Interstate 5 for easy transit north to Oregon and south to the rest of California. Nestled at the very northwestern end of the Central Valley, the city is surrounded by mountains to the north, east, and west; and fertile farm land to the south. Redding is popular with outdoor enthusiasts, offering a variety of water sports and recreation, hiking, camping, biking and many more activities. It also remains popular with Bay Area transplants and retirees and the surrounding rural area and abundant sunshine make it a favorite home base or destination for motorcyclists. Redding is a very family-friendly city, with abundant schools, parks, and organized sports. The Sacramento River runs through the heart of Redding, departing the Shasta Dam and passing under the world-famous Sundial Bridge. Along the river, there are 16 miles of paved walking and biking trails that link to several loop trails for all varieties. Redding also boasts the historic Cascade Theatre, the Shasta County Library, and the Turtle Bay Exploration Park, which features changing exhibitions hilighting art, history, horticulture, forestry and natural science. The county government and local hospitals are the largest employers. Rainy winters and dry, hot summers, along with proximity to lakes and mountains, provide four seasons' worth of outdoor activity, which helps make Redding a beloved Northern California gem.
